Holiday Greetings to All

Hello again from Hawai'i. We stayed busy in 2002. Let me tell you about our year.

Ajja came home in January to live with us after being in Slovenia on Christian Mission work for two years. We got a bunk bed and she roomed with Daly. She worked at the elementary school in Special Education in the morning and taught gymnastics at her old gym in the afternoons. It was great to have everyone together again and for Deme and Ajja to have time to become friends.

Soccer is our winter sport and Daly and Shen both play. Baldwin High School was the best on Maui this year but had to prove it. Shen was senior goalkeeper and the Bears won their league and placed third at the state tournament held here on Maui, after losing a tough semifinal match on a stormy night with Shen ankle deep in mud at the goal. Daly's club soccer team, the Hurricanes, was also successful and traveled to Oahu for a sectional tournament. They went 3-1 and Daly had a goal in the final game.

August 2002 - off to Oahu
Nece and Donn are still busy with flower lei t-shirts. We took Daly with us to the Big Island and sold shirts at the big spring Merrie Monarch Hula festival in Hilo. We introduced a couple of designs this year that were not leis and they have done well...the Stephanotis flower and Swimming Turtles.

Shen graduated from Baldwin High School this year and I have never seen a boy so happy. This event was exciting enough to draw Donn's sister Jill and her kids Maggie and Andrew from Illinois and Nece's Mom, Dot, from Michigan for the ceremonies. They shared a condo and we all played everyday.

Summer then ensued with Deme starting gymnastics....and Daly and his friends chasing wild chickens in the neighborhood....and the Maui summer soccer tournament, the Hawaii Cup....and Ajja participating as a choreographer and dancer in the 20th annual "Pieces" Dance Concert....and Nece dancing hula in Uluwehi Guerrero's concert, her hula teacher.

Summer peaked in mid August when we all went to Oahu for a rare family vacation. First Donn and Nece sold their wares at the "Made in Hawaii" show and then we all enjoyed each others company for a few days in Waikiki and at the Hawaiian Adventures water slide park and at Sea Life Park. Then we saw Ajja off to Philadelphia where she is continuing her dance education with the At Marah Dance Theatre. We also left Shen at the University of Hawaii at Manoa on Oahu where he is a freshman. We returned home with Daly and Deme to a less crowded house.
Daly started eighth grade and Deme is in second grade, marking the nineteenth straight year one of our kids has been in attendance at Wailuku Elementary School. Fall meant back to work for everybody.... selling at the county fair....fixing the van.... finding new workers.... making plans to automate.... schoolwork.... soccer.... gymnastics .... preparing for Christmas crafts fairs. A quest for an automatic screen printer sent Donn to the Northwest for the first time to research equipment and also renew acquaintances with Skip & Marie Jensen, Elizabeth Hastorf, and Frank & Kate Jones, all Maui friends living in the Seattle-Tacoma area.

Christmas approaches. The shows are over. Shen will be home. Ajja will be with her Philly dance family. We've lived admirably through another year here. We hope you are all well and at peace with your lives. Blessings and aloha from Maui.
